Background and Aim: It is necessary to evaluate the ability to accurately distinguish cases of pneumonia caused by COVID-19 from other cases of pneumonia in blood parameters. Accordingly, this study evaluates the ability of routine laboratory tests to differentiate pneumonia caused by COVID-19 in patients with suspected and confirmed COVID-19.
Materials and Methods: This was a cross-sectional analytical study, and the information of all patients whose COVID-19 tests were positive or were suspected of this disease and met the inclusion criteria was recorded. The laboratory findings were compared between children with suspected and confirmed COVID-19. The data were analyzed using the SPSS software, version 26. The significant level for all tests was considered P<0.05.
Results: The mean age of the patients was 6.16±3.94 years. A total of 56(46.7%) children were boys, and 64(53.3%) were girls. A statistically significant difference was observed between the two groups regarding the number of white blood cells (P=0.021), the number of lymphocytes (P=0.000), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (P=0.021), C-reactive protein (P=0.023), and D-dimer (P=0.012). However, a statistical difference was observed between the two groups regarding the amount of hemoglobin (P=0.413), platelet (P=0.813), blood urea nitrogen (P=0.299), creatinine (P=0.541), sodium (P=0.265), potassium (P=0.973), lactate dehydrogenase (P=0.275), aspartate aminotransferase (P=0.722), alanine aminotransferase (P=0.699), albumin (P=0.341), prothrombin time (P=0.834), partial thromboplastin time (P=0.499), trop (P=0.121), and ferritin (P=0.233).
Conclusion: The result showed that the inflammatory values of erythrocyte sedimentation rate and C-reactive protein are high in children with confirmed COVID-19. Leukopenia and lymphopenia were also observed in these patients. These results in children with the complaint of COVID-19 lead us to the fastest possible diagnosis and early treatment in these patients.
